In 2008 the Patient Safety Education Project (PSEP) created a comprehensive, consensus-based, end-learner friendly curriculum for the field of patient safety in the US. The PSEP was modeled after curricular material and resources from Australia’s National Patient Safety Education Project (also called the Australian Framework). The Australian Framework laid the foundation by identifying skills, knowledge and behaviors/attitudes in a framework to guide patient safety education for healthcare workers at all levels within healthcare.

The PSEP Participant’s Handbook includes: four plenaries and nine small group modules that describe the core competencies of patient safety; clusters of modules addressing key clinical safety issues in intensive care, chronic care, and interventional care settings; three action modules devoted to project implementation; and three executive modules targeting upper level management. Additionally, a large number of available web-based toolkits are listed in a resource section, as well as being cited in relevant modules. The PSEP Curriculum is innovative in that it is the first to combine all of these elements into one curriculum which provides a de facto definition of the core content in patient safety. As Dr. Lucian Leape, the internationally recognized leader of the patient safety movement has said,

“…the materials are awesome. We’re all in your debt.”

As a train-the-trainer model, PSEP has also developed an accompanying PSEP Trainer’s Guide complete with Trainer’s Notes at the beginning of each module with session-specific teaching techniques and key planning guidance developed by experts in adult-education.

As part of PSEP’s mission to disseminate core materials as widely as possible, the entire curriculum is freely available for downloading.
